Important Dates
This week in 4th grade:
ELA (English, Language Arts)
Fiction Workshop
We have begun rotating to different classes for reading workshop. Each class will be reading a realistic fiction novel and completing work related to the novel.
We have finished our research of Native Americans in North Carolina and we will be working on completing expository essay about the tribes in one of the three regions.
Math
This week we will be learn to
-Adding and subtract large numbers.
-Solve word problems, including multi-step word problems, using addition and subtraction.
-Drawing tape diagrams to organize our thoughts when solving word problems.

- Book Fair this week!
- This week is our school book fair in the media center.
- We are scheduled to browse for books on Monday and shop on Wednesday. If you would like to send money with your child please put it in an envelope or plastic bag with their name on it.
- If you’d rather, you are welcome to take your child to shop for books with them in the media center. If you are looking to take them during class hours, the best time for us (meaning they won’t need to make up work) would be after 2pm.
- This week is our school book fair in the media center.
- Homework & Assessments this week
- Math test Friday. This will cover what we have learned in math in lessons 11-16. The math binder is a great resource to use to study. The test will include
- Adding and subtracting large numbers.
- Solving word problems, including multi-step word problems.
- Using a tape diagram to organize their thinking on a word problem.
- Adding and subtracting large numbers.
- DLI test on Thursday. Your child should bring home their yellow folder to use to study.
- Social Studies Test Friday. This is on the 3 regions of NC and Native Americans in the regions. A study guide will go home with the children on Monday and is due on Thursday. They will be given time to work on this in class, but may need to complete it at home.
- Spelling Test Friday
- Math HW Mon-Thurs
- Read 30 minutes a night Mon-Thurs and complete reading response

- Parent-Teacher Conference
- Please use the following link to book a parent-teacher conference.
- They are scheduled from 1:30-2pm on weekdays from September 26th-November 3. There are more times available on Halloween, which is a teacher workday.

- FLY Program
- EVERY student brought home a white envelope. The tally charts must be returned in this envelope as well.
- Students will have a Sponsor Form in their envelope ONLY if they returned one in May.
- EVERY student can still participate if they fill out a Tally Chart (signed) and return the completed collection envelope.
- Completed envelopes are due back by Tuesday, September 20 to be eligible for prizes (t-shirts, homework passes, free individual Donatos Pizza, Chuy’s kids meal, raffle tickets, 100 hour club etc. etc. etc.)
- Envelopes can be returned any day between now and September 20 as long as they are complete.
- The class in each grade with the highest percentage of envelopes returned will get to tie-dye their shirts as a class! (September 30)
- FLY Prize Pep-rally is Friday, October 7.
- 100% of the money raised from FLY stays at Sharon!
