Mrs. Crabtree’s Weekly Newsletter
Week of 2/18/19 Hi Parents, Some of last weeks test were pushed back to this week! I missed so many days with my own kids and I didn’t want to test anyone on something without making sure they were taught the concepts thoroughly. Need to know: Field Trip Online payment Halls of Wonder: This year 4th grade is doing a project with the assistance of Mr. Jennings (computer) and Ms. Mazzotta (media) as our Halls of Wonder project. Halls of Wonder is not until April 25th, so there is plenty of time. The kids chose an animal to focus on that is either endangered or a keynote species. A keynote species is an animal on which animals in an ecosystem largely depend. They will develop a leading question about the animal that focuses on a problem and solution, identifies a cause and effect relationship, or compares and contrasts their animal with another within its same species or environment. More information will be coming, but the majority of the work will be completed at school! Important Dates:

This week in 4th grade: Literacy: We will learn about non-fiction text features and how they help us navigate a book and comprehend the text. We will also learn about non-fiction text structure. The different ways a non-fiction text can be structured are: description, cause and effect, sequence/chronological, problem and solution, compare and contrast Math: We will begin adding fractions this week. Science: We will learn about food chains, food webs, animal adaptations, and ecosystems. This will kick off the activity the kids will be working on for their Halls of Wonder project. Thanks, Mrs. Crabtree’s Weekly Newsletter
Week of 2/11/19 Hi Parents, Sorry I missed the newsletter last week! Things were crazy at my house...my daughter had a fever of 104.5, pink eye, then fell at her daycare and scraped her gums very badly. None of them happened at the same time, I got about a day back at work between each event. Definitely a stressful time, but fortunately she is fine now! Need to know: Valentine’s Day is a school-wide pajama day! Week of 1/23/19 Hi Parents, The Wax Museum is this Friday. I can’t believe it’s already here! Families are welcome! Our class will be in the gym and it will be happening from 8:30-9am. The students can come to school with their colonial/American Revolution costumes on or change when they arrive. They can also bring a change of clothes for afterwards. The children have been working hard learning all about the historic figure they are studying. We’ve been working on the speech they will present at the Wax Museum. A good portion already have them memorized. Please work with your child to help them memorize their short speech if they haven’t already. We’ve also been working on their essays in class. The speech is due and we will have an in-class practice on Wednesday 1/23. The essay is due on Wednesday 1/30. MAPS/Assessments results I will send a brief MAPs report home this week. This is a one page document that tells your child’s RIT score (point score) and the grade level expectation for this time of the school year. It also has their percentile ranking. Keep in mind, this percentile is not a grade, it’s a bell curve like at the pediatrician’s office. It will also tell you the expected points of growth the creators of MAPs expected your child to achieve and the number of points they actually gained or lost. You will also see your child’s Fall reading level and if we will be reassessing them soon. Field Trip Online payment Important Dates:

This week in 4th grade: Literacy/Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about the causes of the American Revolution. We will be working on gathering information and writing the speech for our Wax Museum. Your child will need to have this memorized for the wax museum presentation. Math: We will begin a short unit on multi-step word problems starting. These problems will have different operations required to solve. Science: We will learn about how the moon orbits around the Earth and the phases of the moon. Thanks, Mrs. Crabtree’s Weekly Newsletter
Week of 1/7/19 Hi Parents, We have a busy week ahead of us! We will be starting all sorts of new units of study. We’ll start learning about the American Revolution, the moon and our orbit around the sun, and double digit by double digit multiplication. We’ve begun working on research for the wax museum in class. Each child was assigned a person who played an important role in the American Revolution. We will learn about the revolution and your child will research their person in class. We will write a short biography about the person, make a timeline of important events in their lives, and write a short speech from their point of view. This speech will be presented during the wax museum. As long as everyone uses their class time wisely they should have plenty of time to complete all research and writing in class! They will be responsible for memorizing their speech at home and for collecting items to use for their costume at home. We strongly encourage everyone to be creative with their costume for the wax museum. They will be dressing up as the revolutionary figure they have researched, but that doesn’t mean you need to go on Amazon and buy a costume. Many items you may already have could be used...baseball pants could make great pantaloons….just saying. There are a lot of DIY revolutionary war costume ideas on Pinterest. Get creative!

This week in 4th grade: Literacy/Social Studies: We will begin learning about the American Revolution! This is the start of a very exciting unit that will conclude with our wax museum presentation. This week we will learn about the reason for our declaration of independence and some of the acts that led the us there. Math: We are beginning a unit on double digit by double digit multiplication. Based on what I’ve seen the majority of my class use in the past multiplication unit they seem to like using the partial product for multiplication. I am going to teach multiple methods, but this is a great one that leads to a deeper understanding of how the standard algorithm really works. If your child is still struggling with multiplication and division please work on math facts using reflexmath.com and consider checking out the videos below to see a method that we use in class. Here are some videos that may help… Partial product multiplication using multi-digit number x single digit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-6Owg7joIQ Partial product using double digit x double digit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xmsEtyOB10 Partial quotient division https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0vb5hyzA_Q Science: We will learn about how the moon orbits around the Earth and the phases of the moon.
